Self Myofascial Release

You might think muscular discomfort and soreness are signs of hard work.  They are in fact indication that you’re muscles and body have been over worked.  Recently I learned of a revolutionary muscle relaxation technique referred to as self myofascial release (aka SMR) which enables you to easily un-work these muscular strains.

What is Self Myofascial Release?

Self myofascial release is type of message therapy performed through a series of simple yet highly effective exercises.  These exercises improve your range of motion, circulation, and flexibility in only a few minutes.  You’ll quickly realize improved energy levels, released stress, and the ability to relax with ease after even the hardest of work.

I was introduced to self myofascial release as a runner and started with a few of the leg exercises.  These exercises had me roll my weight over a hard foam roller whilst balancing a particular muscle group on that roller (e.g. hamstrings or quadriceps) and relaxing my muscles.  My discomfort as a result of hard workouts quickly disappeared as the roller penetrated deep down into the muscular tissues to work out all the built up tension.  I could explain how to perform these exercises here but have instead attached a video (at top of article) which I think will give you a better idea of how I learned to perform self myofascial release.

Why Should I Perform Self Myofascial Release?

The results are undeniable.  I am confident you too will quickly realize the benefits once you adopt regular practice of these exercises.  After learning about self myofascial release my recovery from hard workouts and physical activities has been dramatically improved and I seldom if ever experience soreness anymore.  Not to mention I’ve become flexible as a cat!
